Biographical Notes
|
Bio Obit* | William L. Toohey was born in Conneaut, Ohio, May 24, 1894, the son of the late James and Mary Moore Toohey. Mr. Toohey had lived in Erie most of his life, and been a life long member of St. Michael’s Church and retired from Union Iron Company. He also was an honorable discharged veteran of the U.S. Army in World War I. Erie Times, 2 Jan 19757 |
Bio Article* | “Granny” Dies from Broken Heart When “Son” is Drafted A human interest story directly attributed to the war is revealed in the untimely death of Mrs. James Toohey, of 948 West Sixteenth street, which occurred this morning shortly before 8 o’clock. Grief-stricken, when her grandson, Will Toohey, was drafted and shipped to Camp Lee, with one of the first contingents to leave Erie. Mrs. Toohey’s health rapidly failed until she was taken ill about a wee ago. She was not considered in critical condition, but because of her advanced age, 68 years, she could not withstand the strain. The last blow, which hastened the end, occurred yesterday when two of her four sons were summoned and given 24 hours to report for service under the colors. Another strange feature of the case is that Will Toohey, until he returns home, always believed Mrs. Toohey, his mother. When he was but a small infant, his mother died and his “granny” raised him to give him to Uncle Sam. He knew no grandmothers. His grandmother was his mother and they both loved each other devotedly. The old lady was heart broken when Will was called from his [sic] side, although he is a man now. Not one single day has passed since he left for Camp Lee but what a postcard or letter arrived home. They always contained comforting words, but still the aged lady grieved over his safety and death was directly due to a broken heart. Surviving besides her grandson, are for sons, John, James, Joe and Jerry, all of Erie, and two daughters, Sarah at home and Mrs. Eugene McManus, wife of the city’s building inspector.
