Biographical Notes

Bio Obit*In 1847, A. Z. Bodine came to Lee Center, Lee Co., Illinois and lived there until death, with the exception of two years spent in Chicago, where he learned the carpenter's trade. Several old houses in town were erected with his assistance. His special trade, however, was making carriages, buggies and wagons, which were noted for their strength and durability

Mr Bodine had studied for the law at one time, was always a student of the best literature and greatly interested in all affairs of national and public interest as well as those affecting education in all its branches.

He was justice in Lee Center for many years, also notary public and his advice on legal matters was eagerly sought by many. We must not omit to mention his unfailing courtesy alike to friend and stranger and he was rightly termed "a gentleman of the old school. "Another one is gone out of the rapidly thinning ranks of the pioneers of Lee county."2,1

Biographical Notes

Bio Article*Celebrate Golden Wedding

50th Anniversary Photo Mr. and Mrs. Thomas C Tagg, who resides at 5343 North Twenty-fifth avenue, will celebrate their fiftieth wedding anniversary on Tuesday. A reception will be given that evening in their honor at the home of their son, Mr. W.B. Tagg, and Mrs. Tagg, at 3715 South Twenty-fifth street. The hours are 8 to 10 o'clock, and all of the friends of Mr. and Mrs. Tagg, have been invited to call during those hours.

Mr. Tagg was born at Granthem [sic], England, while Mrs. Tagg, whose maiden name was Miss Mary Bodine, was born at Port Richmond, Staten Island. He first met his bride-to-be in Kentucky, where he was serving as a soldier in the Union army, and was she was teaching school. When the war was over they were married at Lee Center, Ill, and moved to Nebraska in the spring of 1871, settling on a farm in York county. They resided there until 1877 when they moved to Waco, Neb., living there until 1908, when they moved to their present location in Omaha.

They came to Nebraska in the early day when the Burlington railroad only ran as far as Seward; and they made the trip from there west to their claim in York county in a covered wagon. In the early days Mr. Tagg bought grain and hauled it to Seward, and later when the railroad built west, he moved his business to Waco, and there bought grain and live stock for several years. At one time he ran a hardware, implement and general store.

They have three children living, all of whom will be at the celebration. Mrs. D.D. Ashley, whose home as been for several years in New York city, is here on a visit and will remain for the event. The other two children are Mr. A.W. and Mr. W.B. Tagg, who are engaged in business at the stock yards, and have resided on the south side for many years. One other son, Harry Tagg, who passed away six years ago, will be represented by his son, Harold E. Tagg and the latter's son Harold E. Tagg, Jr., the only great grandchild of Mr. and Mrs. Tagg and another son, Lowell Tagg.

The family of Dr. and Mrs. Ashley includes three children, Homer C. Ashley, Dexter D. Ashley, Jr. and Helen C. Ashley, while the family and Mr. and Mrs. W.B. Tagg includes Richard F. Tagg, William L. Tagg and Mary Elizabeth Tagg.

Research Notes

Research Roadblock*I have not found any source that captures Mary Bodine or her family in Kentucky in the mid 1860s. Mary Bodine's 50th Wedding Anniversary news article, mentions she first met her husband, Thomas Tagg in Kentucky, where he was serving as a Union solider. Thomas served in the 44th Wisconsin Infantry from Feb to Aug 1865 and was discharged from service at Paducha, Kentucky. Mary and Thomas were married in 1866, 350 miles north in Lee Center, Illinois (joint wedding with her sister Maria Jane). Mary was born in Elizabeth Port, Essex Co., New Jersey and was living there at the time of her father's death in 1854. Mary appears to have been captured in the 1860 census in Elizabeth as a school teacher but there is no sign of her mother (Sarah) or sister (Mary Jane). Both show up in Lee Center records in 1866. Did they move to Kentucy after Vincent Bodines death? If so, what drew them to Kentucky? [Jun 2018]
