Biographical Notes

Bio NoteExtract from the Kansas City Star newspaper (13 Feb 1919) as the 65th Regiment, Coast Artillery stopped in Kansas City after its return from Europe and on a train ride back to its home base at Fort Worden its trip to Fort Worden, Washington. Mrs Nellie Tagg (Corporal Tagg's mother), came to great the train and the newspaper extract describes a discussion between her and the Regiment's Commander, Colonel Kerfoot. It was later on this train ride that Corporal Lowell Tagg contracted Influenza and died from pneumonia only days later.

"My son, Lowell Tagg, can you tell me where he is?"
Shee asked Colonel Kerfoot. "What! The mother of Lowell Tagg!" he exclaimed, and grasped her hand. "He is the bravest man in my regiment. Of course I know him. He is my best courier. You'll find him drum major of the band and he is with the thrid section. Every man in the regiment knows him. Then Colonel Kerfoot told her of a time when Lowell was wounded at Verdun, but refused to quit his post."

"The Sixty-fifth Coast Artillery, of which he was a member, returned to the United States on January 30. His company passed through Omaha [his hometown] on February 14 on their way to Fort Worden." "Tagg was stricken with pneumonia on the trip and was taken off the train at Seattle."
