Elmer F. Schmelzer1,2
(23 Jul 1907 - Jun 1985)
Biographical Notes
|
Bio Obit | Evelyn King Schmelzer's first home as well as her grandfather Merlyn H. Church's home is still maintained in Kennewick.
Evelyn had many fond memories of her childhood in Kennewick, including the opening day of the bridge across the Columbia River connecting Kennewick and Pasco. As a teenager, Evelyn worked at the soda fountain in Kennewick's first grocery and mercantile, owned by her father, Clarence E. King.
Evelyn's grandparents, Merlyn and Lois Church, owned and operated Church's Grape Juice in Kennewick, which later was purchased by Welch's. Evelyn and cousin Margaret Hoyt were locally known as the "grape juice twins."
After completing school in Kennewick, Evelyn was selling Avon and working at Belair's Bakery when she met her future husband Elmer Schmelzer.
Times were hard and jobs scarce, so Elmer found a job in Ellensburg picking apples and making their first home in a tent. Evelyn remembers fondly those very difficult times making apple pies on a three-legged stove in their tent. They eventually moved back to Kennewick raising chickens, dairy cows and growing asparagus. I In the early 1940's they moved to Vancouver, first raising chickens for someone else and then raising about 1500 turkeys themselves. They moved again, this time to Colfax, where Elmer had a job working on a chicken ranch. By the late 40's, they had moved back to Kennewick where they then purchased a home near Knob Hill Market. In the early 50's Elmer began working for Hanford and the family moved to Richland for four years and then back to Kennewick to their home on 10th Avenue.
Evelyn was a wonderful cook, seamstress and most importantly a loving and caring wife, mother and grandmother.
