Bio Obit* | Eugene A. "Gene" Runser was born in Erie on August 17, 1921, a son of the late Joseph and Barbara Mog Runser. Gene was a lifelong member of Sacred Heart Church and a volunteer with their Food Pantry. He graduated from Academy High School and then spent a year at Gannon College where he left to enlist in the Army Air Corps during WW II. He was a Sergeant in the 390th Bomb Group in the 571st Squadron. He flew 14 missions as a Radio Operator and Waist Gunner. He went MIA and was captured and held at Stalag 17. He received various medals including the Purple Heart. After the service he became a Letter Carrier for the US Postal Service retiring after 38 years. Gene enjoyed bowling, tennis and golfing and, being the modest man that he was, never bragged about his 3 hole-in-ones. Erie Times News, 22 Oct 20104 |

Bio Obit* | Robert J. Runse was born Sept. 14, 1917, in Erie.
He graduated from Cathedral Preparatory School. He attended Cathedral College, a junior college that had just opened, for two years. He earned a bachelor's degree in chemistry from St. Vincent College.
He taught math and science at Cathedral Preparatory School and Cathedral College until 1941 when he joined the government-sponsored Civilian Pilot Training program, earning his private pilot license. He was recommended for further training in acrobatics, cross country and instructor rating in Buffalo, N.Y. He began teaching glider pilots for the U.S. Army Air Force at Ft. Morgan in Colorado, a program that closed in 1943.
He was an airline pilot with United Airlines for 341/2 years, retiring in September 1977.
He learned to speak Esperanto in 1960 and became involved with various Esperanto groups for 20 years. He was also interested in astronomy, architecture, most sciences, health and Bible studies. He was a member of the Glen Ellyn Kiwanis and was an active member of St. Petronille Catholic Church, where he taught seventh grade Bible study and was a member of the Knights of Columbus.
