Biographical Notes

Bio Article*POLICEMAN, STILL 'PERT,' WILL RETIRE
Capt. Sweeney, Known as Pop, to Relinquish Wheel of Transportation Division

Captain of Police Clarence J. (Pop) Sweeney, commander of the transportation division of the police department for ten years, and affectionately known as the Beau of the Chief's office, is going to retire next Friday.

"And, by Golly, said Pop, who prides himself on his oratory. "I mean I'm going to retire, to. There ain't a durned thing wrong with me. I feel doggone pert. But I've put in twenty-two years and now I'm going to take time off right now and let some of the younger bloods have a chance,"

Pop Sweeney is, perhaps, one of the best-known officers in the department as his duties brought him in contact with City Hall departments and his work on the Police Relief Association took him into close relation with the rank and file of the force.

"Well sir," he said, "I got my appointment on May 17, 1909. There was just one auto, six horses and two patrol wagons in the transportation department. I got the job of driving the auto. I got the job of cief driver in October, 1920."

Police Sergeant Eddie Barnes, who has acted as Capt. Sweeney's assistant, has been appointed by Chief Steckel as acting captain in Sweeney's place.
