Biographical Notes

Bio Note*Hilles joined the Tucson Fire Department as a hoseman in 1913. He was successively elevated to the position of captain, assistant chief, and, in 1938 was appointed chief. Born in Barnesville, Ohio, Hilles came to Arizona In 1900, and finally settled in Tucson in 1912, after a short residence in Bisbee. In addition to his position as fire chief, Hilles also served as acting police chief from 1938 until 1940, combining both offices during the latter year. The temporary police appointment was made to fill a vacancy until a trained officer could be secured. He was retired in 1945. Prior to his employment with the fire department, Hilles saw extensive service with the army. From 1900 to 1903, he served with the Fifth Cavalry in the Philippine Insurrection, and from 1901 to 1910, he was stationed with the cavalry at Ft. Huachuca. In 1911, Hilles was transferred to Ft. Bliss, Texas, and later discharged.
